KITTY HAWK, N.C.
Another mass of dead fish has washed ashore in Kitty Hawk, less than a week after thousands of menhaden cluttered the beaches north of Corolla.
North Carolina Marine Patrol officers investigated the piles of fish around 10 a.m. Monday, according to Patricia Smith, spokeswoman for the state’s Division of Marine Fisheries.
The officers did not see any vessels offshore that could have lost the haul in a broken net or dumped it overboard, she said. Dense schools of menhaden swam offshore from Corolla to Kill Devil Hills, a distance of some 25 miles, she said. Dolphins and birds were seen chasing the schools of fish toward shore while shorebirds munched on the dead fish on the beach.
