Fishing in Galveston Bay discouraged after natural 'fish kill'

The smell of Galveston Bay near Seabrook might turn foul in the near future.

Why?

It turns out, fish – a lot of fish – are dying in the bay, authorities said, and washing ashore.

The fish are dying because of naturally low oxygen levels in the water, which essentially suffocates fish, according to Seabrook authorities. Those fish will turn up on the coast and be a nuisance for an undetermined amount of time.

The phenomenon is called a "fish kill," according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. It happens naturally but can be accelerated by human activities, authorities said.

So, while people hanging out on the coast might see scores of dead fish, don't be alarmed. They will leave the area naturally, either by washing out into the bay again or being eaten by less-picky scavengers.

If you spot these dead fish, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department asks that you report it to their 24-hour hotline for their researchers. When the fish are spotted, remember to check the following before calling:

  • Location, date and time
  • Water color, clarity and any odor
  • Number, size and species of affected organisms
  • Recent weather
  • Condition and behavior of animals or organism
  • Are plants or other organisms affected?

The last time a fish kill affected the Seabrook area was in May 2014.

Because of the event, officials are discouraging anyone from fishing in the area until the event is over.
