Phills overpower the Fish 14-2

The Phills have had an interesting season. They have been in first and around it for most of the season. Since the All-Star break they have been on an incredible decline. They have only been able to dominant the Marlins, while losing pretty much every other series they play. Yesterday was no different as they easily beat the Fish 14-2.

Wei-Yin Chen: 4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR

Zach Eflin: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR

Wei-Yin Chen has been terrible on the road all season, that is just fact. He gives up more home runs on the road by a far margin and he has played more games at home. It really is incredible to look at the stark difference between road Chen and home Chen. Add that to the Phills beating up the Marlins since the All-Star break and you have a tough game to win.

The location for Chen tonight was most damning. Many pitches sat nicely in the zone, allowing hitters to swing away. Chen gave up three hits in the second inning, two of them being home runs. The Phills offense produced greatly, they scored runs in five out of the eight innings they batted.

Chen ran into more trouble in the fourth inning. He gave up three straight singles to load the bases. It was easy to see that the Phills were not going to finish the inning without scoring at least one run. Roman Quinn was up with the bases loaded and he hit into a force-out, scoring one run. Chen limited the damage to one run before ending the inning, making it 5-0 Phills.

Tayron Guerrero came in for Chen in the fifth inning. He was not successful in his relief appearance. He gave up a big three-run home run to Aaron Altherr, his second of the game. The Phills now had a commanding 8-0 lead over the Fish.

The Fish did have a bit of offense in the game. J.T. Realmuto absolutely crushed a ball 422 feet into the center field stands. Realmuto got all of it and it was nice to see, the home run ball does not come around often for the Fish. The Marlins had a few hits in the seventh but could only produce one run. Their nine hits in the game were scattered and led to them only scoring two runs. The Phills on the other hand continued to score in bunches until it was 14-2. Today is a new day for the Fish.

Matchup Summary:

After a long and rainy week, the Fish will finish up their road trip in Philadelphia. It is looking like a nice sunny weekend, so no more postponements. The Fish are 1-4 in their last four games. The Phillies also have been getting beat up bad, they are currently on a five game losing streak. The last time the Phills had a successful series was the last time they played the Fish. If the Phills could play the Fish for the rest of the season they would have a shot with catching up with the Braves, who are currently 7 12 games ahead in the division.

Wei-Yin Chen will be on the mound tonight. Chen was not successful in his last outing, a game in which he only pitched four innings. Zach Eflin will be up for the Phills, he has 9 wins on the season with a 4.42 earned run average. Eflin actually did worse than Chen in his last outing, he only lasted three innings in a game against the Mets. The Fish need to continue to lose to get a better draft pick...so play ball!

Game Thread Question: Should Wei-Yin Chen really be in the rotation at this point in the season?
