Brisk breezes have riled up inshore waters over the past week. That puts some fish in a funk, but sheepshead don't care. And the pole-striped porgies are among the few delicious fishes not currently prohibited for take home. Sheepshead are bottom feeders that love sand fleas, small crabs including fiddlers and mangrove crabs, and tube worms. But fresh shrimp, like Dan Gregory used on a recent Fishbuster Charter, are the go-to bait for most anglers. Live shrimp are good, but a livie with the tail pinched off, or even half of a fat frozen shrimp may be better at attracting sheepies, which have noses like bloodhounds. Use a splitshot with a circle hook, or a lead jig head to keep the bait on the bottom, and look for a combination of structure like pilings or oyster bars, with a good current to carry the bait's scent.
