A tiny silver fish called the Ozark chub that swims in Missouri and Arkansas streams won't be listed as an endangered species, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Although it's vulnerable to runoff from agriculture, forestry, mining, unpaved roads, road or pipeline construction, water pollution, and logging, FWS says the small fish is still found in 91 percent of its Ozarks watersheds.
The fish survives even though some populations have been partially or entirely isolated from each other by dams and impoundments for 50 years.
The Ozark chub doesn't face the threat of extinction now or in the foreseeable future, according to FWS.
Found in Ozark mountain streams of Arkansas and Missouri, the Ozark chub is a small, freshwater, ray-finned fish. Its back is gray, yellow, green, or tan. There are dark blotches along the fish’s midline.
The chub is found in the White River basin, including the Black River and its tributaries, and the Little Red River in Arkansas. It is also found in the St. Francis River basin in Missouri.
The Fish and Wildlife Service says the Ozark chub's future can be improved by working to reduce siltation in the streams in which is swims.
