How popular is a Friday Fish Fry during Lent?
Just ask Boy Scout Troop 283. Its annual Lenten Fish Fry is the organization's primary fundraiser for the year and helps to defray costs and keeps the program affordable.
"We serve in excess of 500 meals in three hours," says Beth Keen, the fundraising co-chair. "It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun also for our Boys and our adult volunteers."
Catholics traditionally abstain from meat on Friday during Lent, which begins Wed., Feb. 14, and ends Thursday, March 29.

The Friday, open-to-the-public dinners – and, in at least one case a Friday fish lunch – are usually organized by Knights of Columbus councils. You’ll find homey, comfort food at affordable prices. Beer and wine, if available, is usually extra.
While several churches in the state have ongoing Friday Fish Fries, Boy Scout Troop 283 has a one-day-only dinner. This year, their dinner will be on March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Christ the Teacher School at 2451 Frazer Road in Newark.
The food, mostly all homemade, includes beer battered haddock, fried shrimp, French fries, macaroni salad, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, salad, rolls, clam chowder, and desserts
Prices for eat-in or take-out meals range from $18 for a combination Haddock/Shrimp meal to $15 for individual Haddock or Shrimp meals. Clam Chowder is available for $4 for a bowl. Tickets can be purchased online at www.fishfryde.org.
