Far Cry 5 is a bloody good time, but sometimes you just want to take a break from all the headshots and gruesome immolation. Sometimes a weary hero just wants to kick back and catch a few fish. Now it’s totally possible to just pick up a fishing rod and figure it out yourself, but the easiest (and best) way to get the most out of fishing in Far Cry 5 is to follow the side quests built into the game. Not only do you pick up valuable tips but you unlock better equipment and complete some challenges along the way too.
Far Cry 5 Fishing Basics: How To Do It
There’s a few things you should know before you start running down the fishing questline. First, if you want to be a serious angler then unlock the Fisher King perk. It costs four points and allows you to catch fish more quickly and unlocks a wide variety of fishing flys in the equipment wheel. It’s also required to catch the heaviest fish if you want to set a record catch and earn a perk point (you can check the leading weights on a chalkboard in the back of The Spread Eagle in Fall’s End). Catching fish is just a matter of casting well and managing line tension as you tire a fish out. You do this by moving the rod in the opposite direction the fish is fighting to go towards. It’s easier said than done.

Fishing Sidequests In Far Cry 5

If you’re going to take the story path to fishing glory, it starts with this side quest in Dylan’s Master Bait shop (get it?) north of Widow’s Creek. When you get there you’ll find his girlfriend Skylar outside and need to mediate a lover’s quarrel. Basically, Dylan won’t give her back her fishing gear until you start destroying his stuff outside the trailer (shoot his guitar, his chairs, his keg, etc) and he’ll eventually come out. He tosses a fishing rod on the ground, snatch it up and follow Skylar and she’ll teach you some fishing basics. Of course, it’s all about helping her catch The Admiral (eventually) but there’s another side quest before you get there.
Gone Fishin’
Rewards: 200 Resistance Points, $700
Ok, this side quest requires some advanced fishing skills so if you haven’t already purchased the Fisher King perk you need to do it before you start. Talk to Skylar again and she’ll ask for help catching The Admiral (she wants the reward money to flee Hope County with Dylan) but, unfortunately, you’re not up to the challenge yet. She marks three locations on your map and asks you to go catch one of each of the following: bass, sturgeon and salmon.
The key to catching these fish is to use the specialized casting lures made available by the Fisher King perk. Use a bass popper to catch a bass near Henbane River, a hybrid sturgeon lure to catch a paddlefish in Holland Valley and the salmon egg bait to nab a salmon on the north shore of Snowshoe Lake.
The order you catch the fish, and their size, doesn’t matter. Once you get all three Skylar radios in to tell you it’s completed. And, Hope County being Hope County, don’t expect to just post up and fish without some trouble at these locations. Plenty of cultists and dangerous wildlife will be out to get you, so it helps to make sure an area is clear before getting distracted.
The Admiral
Rewards: Wonderboy Fishing Rod unlocked, 200 Resistance Points, $1450
You’ll want to buy a better rod at the General Store before taking on The Admiral. Once you get one, head to the docks on Clagett Bay (north of Dylan’s shop) and talk to Skylar one last time. She’ll explain that she hurt her hand and it's up to YOU to catch The Admiral. If this seems like a big ask remember, it’s Far Cry 5 , people are asking you to kill dozens and dozens of people too. So catching a fish should be easy!
Take the dinghy to where the bay borders Holland Valley. This is where you’ll find The Admiral. This area is also full of cultists, including helicopters, so pack a decent long range rifle and some medikits (and maybe some back up crew) to help defend the area as you fish. Use the hybrid sturgeon lure again and start casting. The Admiral doesn’t come easy, and you’ll have to fight like hell to get him. Skylar will offer some words of encouragement as he breaks your line time and again. You can also cast from the dock or the boat, it doesn’t really matter, so switch it up if you feel like one spot just isn’t working for you. Once you catch The Admiral go back to Skylar and she’ll split the winnings with you.
That’s it! If you follow the side quests you’ll learn a ton about fishing in the process and end up with one of the best rods in the game. Once you’ve got the skills, start hunting for fishing magazines to go after individual challenges and records, or just kick back and enjoy some leisure time anytime you find a stream, lake or river that calls to you.
