Blues guitarist Samantha Fish brings her sultry "Wild Heart" to New Orleans Jazz Fest

Lately, Fish's new hometown is providing plenty of inspiration. The 29-year-old moved to New Orleans a year ago and made the 2018 lineup for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. (Catch her in the Blues Tent at 4:15 p.m. on April 27.) She promises to keep the set fresh, with plans for a seven-piece band mixing horns, fiddle and keys.

As her career has grown, it became a natural choice to call New Orleans home, Fish said. "It's a beautiful place and somewhere I've wanted to be for a long time."

She's bought her first home, and in the midst of writing, recording and performing, she also is having fun renovating the Gentilly bungalow from a double to a single.

"It's my oasis. It's my first time owning, and I have real pride in that," she said.

In the process, New Orleans is starting to feel like home to the Kansas City native. She even found a barbecue spot she loves to take Kansas City friends when they are in town. "The Joint feeds my barbecue fix," she said.

For a quick bite, Fish heads to St.Roch market, and her favorite new spot is Café Amelie.

But she often finds creative inspiration just walking through City Park, along the lakefront or through the neighborhoods of the city.

"I love how every neighborhood has a vibe," Fish said.
