The Ninth Annual Hug-a-Tree/Kiss-a-Fish Youth Adventure is coming up on May 18-20 to provide a three-day camping and fishing experience for young children.
Hug-a-Tree/Kiss-a-Fish is hosted by the Community and Children’s Impact Center that gives children a chance to compete in fishing, go camping and have fun that they may not otherwise have had otherwise.
The Impact Center also brings a multitude of celebrities to the event such as famous boxer Termite Watkins and former Harlem Globetrotter Reggie “Air Man” Dixon. This year a new celebrity is coming to the event, according to Executive Director Brenda Myers.
“They call him the World’s Strongest Redneck,” she said.
Known as Steve McGranahan, the World’s Strongest Redneck’s claim to fame is appearances on Country Music Television’s (CMT) Country Fried Home Videos where he performs feats of strength in comedic fashion. McGranahan is reportedly planning a documentary on the Hug-a-Tree/Kiss-a-Fish event and the Impact Center.
Another celebrity coming to the event is professional model Alberta Zemyra.
“She is going to teach the kids how to do runway walking,” said Myers.
This year’s event is set to be held at the YMCA’s Camp Cullen, which has amenities for children to have fun such as zip lines and a swimming pool.
Organizations will also be present to host booths for other bits of fun such as Texas Parks and Wildlife, which will teach children about archery, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Bikers Against Child Abuse.
The Impact Center is scheduling performers for the event as well.
“We’ll have four bands on Saturday night,” said Myers.
The bands include Cross Town Renegades, East Texas Outlaws and the Diamond Lindsey Band.
Myers says the event is looking for donations of food to feed the visitors.
“We’re needing briskets and boxes of hamburger patties,” she said.
Hug-a-Tree/Kiss-a-Fish is scheduled for May 18-20 at the YMCA’s Camp Cullen located at 460 Cullen Lp., Trinity. Anyone planning to bring a child with special needs must contact Myers as soon as possible.
Sponsors have two weeks left to sponsor the event. For more information on bringing a child, making a donation or sponsoring the event, call Myers at 936-499-2632.
