Red tide causing dead fish to wash up on Florida beaches

If you’re thinking about a nice, romantic getaway to the Gulf of Mexico, you may want to reconsider.

A breakout of red tide is still in full bloom in Southwest Florida, and fish kills are being reported up and down the coasts of Lee and Collier counties.

On top of that, people are reporting respiratory irritation due to the naturally-occurring microscopic alga, K. brevis,  which usually proliferates once a year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Red tide blooms can stay in the area for just a few days to several months. This year’s outbreak, however, is lasting longer than normal.
