Do fish have faces?

Developed by a company in Norway, the “fish-al” recognition system will be used by Cermaq Group AS to create a medical profile for each individual fish in salmon farms along the country’s coastline. Each fish is scanned when it surfaces for air (which it has to do about every four days), and the 3-D scanner can tell them apart by the spot patterns around their eyes, mouth and gills.

Sea lice have become a serious problem among Atlantic salmon populations, and most healthy fish have been subjected to stressful treatments in addition to those infected. This system aims to put an end to that by telling farmers exactly which salmon need to be quarantined and treated, allowing them to leave the healthy ones alone.
