MANILA - Majority of Filipinos say fish and seafood available in markets are now smaller, more expensive, and have fewer varieties compared to a decade ago, a survey showed.

A Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey commissioned by Oceana Philippines found that five out of 10 Filipinos see that catch from the seas were fewer and have shrunken.

Some 87 percent meanwhile say that fish and seafood are now more expensive compared to 10 years ago.

Most Filipinos, at 70 percent, eat fish or seafood at least five days a month, according to SWS.

The survey also noted that the catch of Filipino fishermen has continuously declined over the past four years, from 2008 to 2017, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.

However, only four out of 10 Filipinos perceive destructive fishing as the "most important problem of our oceans," and only 2 out of 10 think of overfishing as a serious threat.

The survey, titled “Feasting or Fasting on Fish?,” was conducted from Sept. 23 to 27, 2017 and had a total of 1,500 adult respondents nationwide.

It was done using face-to-face interviews and has a +/-3 percent margin of error for national percentage.
