Calling all anglers: Fish for free this weekend

Break out the rod and line and enjoy some time on the water this weekend, even if you don't have a license to fish.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host their annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

All fishing license fees will be waived for two days for residents and out-of-state visitors. Fishing is open on all waters for all species of fish. During the free fishing weekend, DNR recreational passport will not be required for entry at any state park.

A yearly fishing license is normally required to fish in Michigan, but twice a year, DNR hosts free fishing weekends. The event will also be held on June 9 and 10. Licenses can be purchased for $76 for Michigan residents or $266 for nonresidents here.

There are also lists of events planned for the weekend that may require pre-registration and fees. Counties hosting events include Bay, Benzie, Chippewa, Genesee, Gogebic, Grand Traverse, Huron, Ingham, Iron, Leelanau, Macomb, Newaygo, Oakland, Otsego, Roscommon, Van Buren and Wexford. See a full list of events online

Weather for this weekend is expected to be in the mid-30s on Saturdays with light snow showers in the evening and a low of 28 degrees. Sunday is expected to have highs in the lower 40s with dry conditions and a low of 35 degrees.

"We expect high pressures this weekend to push light winds, which will mean our friends by the lakes will experience colder temperatures," said Alex Manion, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's White Lake Township office.

A reminder for ice fishers, deadlines are approaching to get your fishing shanties off the ice. Shanties on Lake St. Clair must be removed by sunset Feb. 25.

Elsewhere, the deadlines range from March 1 in the southern Lower Peninsula to March 15 in the northern Lower Peninsula to March 31 for most of the Upper Peninsula. After those dates, you can still use shanties but must remove them each day.

All other fishing regulations still apply. See the full guide online.
