Photographer captures 'one in a trillion' image of bird carrying a shark carrying a fish

A west Florida photographer has become a social media and TV sensation for his “one-in-a-trillion’’ wild photograph of an osprey holding a shark which has a fish dangling in its mouth.

The Madeira Beach photographer who goes by Doc Jon originally believed the bird had a fish in its talons but then he discovered that it was actually a shark eating a fish.

“It was very far away so I couldn’t see it through my viewer but when I got home and zoomed in on the photo I saw the catch was a shark,” Jon told WTVT-Ch. 13, the Fox affiliate in Tampa.

The photograph has been shared on social media and featured on various TV newscasts in the state and across the country.

“It’s weird seeing my own photo going crazy like this,’’ Jon wrote on Facebook which features his other photos of various birds eating fish.

“Clearly, the osprey shark fish is the most unusual,’’ he said.

The small shark seemed to be about a foot-long and possibly may have been a blacktip or a nurse shark.

On Facebook and Twitter, people were in awe of the photograph.

“Surely this is once in a lifetime picture,’’ wrote Bonnie Gentile on Jon’s Facebook page which now features the famous photo as the cover photo.

“What an amazing photo,’’ added Jeanne Yearsley Mezger.
