A fish store in Kuwait has reportedly been shut down by officials after the owners were caught sticking plastic googly eyes on fish in a bid to make them appear fresher.
Hilarious images of one of the unconvincing ‘fresh fish’ were shared on social media by local newspaper Al Bayan.
The paper said that the country’s ministry of commerce had shut down the store after cottoning on to the slippery trick.
The pictures posted online showed the eye slipping off the fish’s face, clearly showing a much more yellow eye beneath.
Social media users took to Twitter to ridicule the unnamed fishmonger’s ploy.
One Twitter user said: ‘The intersection of people who know enough about fish to look at their eyes to judge freshness and people who would be tricked by googly eyes can’t possibly be very large?’
Another said: ‘I thought I’ve seen it all, but twitter always proves me wrong’.
Another advised that the fishmonger ‘should have used a pritt stick’ if they wanted to get away with the trick.
Elodie Mainze said: ‘That is gross, and bad business practice, but I can’t help [but] laugh at the same time. Did they honestly think people wouldn’t notice?’
