Fishing is always a relaxing way to spend your time, either in the real world or in Red Dead Redemption 2. In the real world, fishing is super time-consuming and difficult, but Red Dead 2’s fishing is easy and fun if you know how to do it.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Fishing Guide: Where to Find Lures, What Bait to Use and More
Once the fishing pole is unlocked, equip it by holding L1/LB to open up the weapon wheel. Press R1/RB to switch the weapon wheel over to the item wheel, then highlight the fishing pole. The fishing pole can only be equipped when a player is near water.
There are three types of fish in Red Dead Redemption 2: river fish, lake fish and swamp fish. Each region has its own distinct species, and different baits and lures are used to attract these fish in each region.
For best results, you’re going to want to buy lures. These attract bigger fish in each area and can be used multiple times. They aren’t too expensive either, usually only a few dollars each. Lures can be found at general stores, with different stores carrying different lures.
To bait your pole, hold L1/LB to pull up the bait wheel with your fishing pole out. Scroll through different baits or lures using L2/R2 or LT/RT. When selecting bait, the game tells you which types of fish will be most attracted to it. Once you have your fishing pole all lured or baited, stand facing the water. Hold L2/LT to wind up, then press R2/RT to send your hook sailing.
Once you have your hook in the water, you have to wait for a fish. If you’re using a lure, be sure to slowly reel in your line to make your lure look like a swimming fish. Your controller rumbles lightly when you have a nibble, and much more intensely when you have a fish hooked. Once you feel that strong vibration, quickly press down on R2/RT.
Now the controller should start vibrating for a longer period of time. This is the fish struggling to swim away. While the controller is vibrating, move the left stick to angle the fishing pole in the opposite direction the fish is swimming. Wait for the vibrating to end, then start spinning the right stick to reel in the fish. Keep this routine up until you’ve scooped up your prize.
Other random notes about fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2:
Each species of fish bites bait differently. Basically, just wait for a strong vibration before pressing R2/RT.
Weather affects fish. Rainy and cloudy days are better for fishing than sunny days.
Releasing fish after reeling them in rewards you with honor.
There is a Legendary version of each species of fish. Your map will mark the location of the Legendary fish when you are close.
